VRF/VRV

VRF/VRV Air Conditioning Installation, Service and Repair

“Variable Refrigerant Flow / Variable Refrigerant Volume” is a bit of a mouthful, so this type of air conditioning system is usually just called VRF/VRV. The important word is ‘variable’ as VRF/VRV aircon allows you to adjust the heating or cooling output of your a/c in each room as required.

Best suited to large new-build properties/business where you want to supply air conditioning to different rooms, and large commercial premises to create zonal air conditioning to suit employees working in various parts of the workplace.

VRF/VRV systems can also transport heat from one part of the property to another, so if certain rooms get very warm at specific times of day, you can use them to heat other areas for an even more efficient way to make your whole home or workplace more comfortable.

What is VRF/VRV?

A VRF/VRV system normally includes a single external condensing unit, with any number of air handling units connected to it. The heating/cooling output of these units are adjusted in one of several ways:

  • A variable speed compressor to adjust refrigerant flow
  • Multiple compressors that offer different output capacity

You benefit from closer control over your air conditioning in multiple areas around your property, so you can heat or cool rooms to different temperatures, and to improve efficiency overall.

What are the benefits of VRF/VRV?

As a way to change the output of air conditioning in specific parts of your house or commercial premises, VRF/VRV means your a/c output is more precisely matched to each room or zone.

This means better efficiency overall, which translates into:

  • Reduced running costs due to less wasted electricity
  • Smaller carbon footprint by limiting excess a/c use
  • Less maintenance as air handling units are under less stress

All of this is combined with better comfort, as you’re able to set the air temperature in each zone rather than heating or cooling your whole property to the same extent.

How does VRF/VRV work?

Using a variable speed compressor, or multiple compressors of different sizes, the system is able to alter the volume of refrigerant flow. You can think of it as being like a thermostat for each part of your home or business. As you adjust the thermostat, the system will circulate only the minimum volume of refrigerant needed to achieve the target temperature, operating at maximum efficiency.

In commercial premises, this can be combined with automated controls to turn the aircon off when there are no humans present or windows and doors are left open.

How energy efficient are VRF/VRV air conditioners?

VRV/VRV systems are being updated all the time by their manufacturers, so by choosing the latest model, you can make sure you get the most energy efficient performance, using the current recommended refrigerants.

Like all air conditioning, the overall energy efficiency depends on how you use your a/c. But with a VRF/VRV system, you know that the circulated refrigerant will always be optimised for the settings and ambient air temperature.
